Project: Compilation of the Kruger to Canyons Biosphere Region Nomination Document to UNESCO.
Location: K2C BR, Mpumalanga and Limpopo, South Africa.
Client: K2C Biosphere Region.
Project Partners: Debby Thomson and Marie-Tinka Uys
Task & implementation: Biovista prepared the Kruger to Canyons Biosphere Reserve’s official nomination document – which was sent to UNESCO (France) in July 2001 for review. This involved accumulation and writing up of all social, geographical, ecological and developmental information pertaining to the region; as well as other aspects such as co-planning of the 3 zonations (core, buffer & transition). The BR incorporates 2 of South Africa’s Flagship Protected Areas (PA’s): half of Kruger National Park and the Blyde River Canyon Nature reserve as well as several other PA’s. The K2C BR was proclaimed by UNESCO September 2001. [At the World Parks conference in 2003, a UNESCO official mentioned it was the best nomination they had received to date].
