Project: Lecturing Tourism Development and Management (Level 6); and An Introduction to Eco-tourism (Level 5).
Location: Client: SAWC C/O Theresa Sowry.
Project Partner: SAWC.
Task & implementation: Since 2003 these courses have been presented to the long course (Advanced Certificate & Higher certificate) students. The learners hail from many different African countries and are involved in Natural Resource Management in one way or another. In these respective tourism related courses they learn about the different concepts and what it means to develop tourism products in a more eco-friendly manner. The students learn that there are many negative impacts associated with tourism, but that it can be a tool to improve economic situations, provided that the ecological and social integrity of the area is not exploited, because these are the resources on which the product depends. The basics of customer care and marketing are also covered. All courses are presented as practically and interactively as possible, irrespective of the level, with presentations & lectures, group activities and field excursions. In future it is expected that the students will engage with local tourism providers in a more meaningful manner
